The Back Porch Brief is your source for updates on what’s happening in Arran-Elderslie.
It seems every time I come back from an event in our community, I bump into someone disappointed they “didn’t know anything about it”. Sadly, it seems despite all the best efforts, most information is now being shared on social media and even still, it’s not getting out to people.
The Back Porch Brief is my attempt to help you be just a little more informed about what is happening in our lovely, little community.
I will share bi-weekly updates (twice a month) from the council table, news on capital projects, programs and services offered by the municipality. I am also going to gather upcoming community events as best I can to share them since I realize, I hear about and see a lot of what’s happening through Facebook and many others don’t. An ongoing calendar will be on the Events page.
I will also be moderating comments and will remove any that are inappropriate. Hopefully I don’t need to elaborate on what that entails but basically profanity, personal attacks toward others, racism and other forms of discrimination, and the spreading of misinformation via comments. All will be removed without warning. So basically, don’t be a jerk. There’s already enough toxic places on the Internet.
Never miss an update—every new post is sent directly to your email inbox!
Subscribe to get full access to the ad-free newsletter and publication archives. As we start out, I am aiming to send bi-weekly newsletters and event listings. These will be free and available for anyone to access.
Subscribers will be able to join the conversation and comment on articles, and have full access to our archives on the website.
From the Desk of the Deputy Mayor
This newsletter is written by Jen Shaw, Deputy Mayor, Municipality of Arran-Elderslie. All information and views shared are my own and do not represent the views of the rest of Council or the staff of the municipality. My goal with this newsletter to keep residents informed of things happening in our community in a way that’s convenient, easy to use and not subject to the whims of social media algorithms.
Finally, this isn’t meant to be political and I will try to remain unbiased but there may be times I share an opinion on an issue. That’s one of the privileges that comes with being the writer and truth be told, it’s pretty darn hard to be totally without bias. We all have opinions and views that are shaped by our life experiences. My goal here is to share information rather than report on “what happened”. I’ll always try to only share facts, but I’m not a journalist and am not trying to be.
Our opinions will likely differ at times and that’s cool. I welcome respectful feedback but kindly ask anything related to current issues before Council are sent to my council email: jshaw at arran-elderslie dot ca.
